Helping Charlotte’s Homeless Children – Agents in the Community

Next month local community members will tee up at The Peninsula Club along the shores of Lake Norman to help homeless children around Charlotte.

A Child’s Place is helping spread the word about the need for helping homeless children in our local schools, according to their website “in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, more than 4,000 children are homeless. Imagine trying to complete homework in a noisy and crowded shelter, or sleeping in your car the night before a big test. For more than 4,000 children in our community, that is a reality. A Child’s Place intervenes at the family’s point of crisis, helping stabilize the family and addressing needs to help the children succeed in the classroom.”

Ivester Jackson agent Julie Lopez supports the cause and says “every day in our work we see the importance of homes in children’s lives and I think it is important to help those who are not so lucky to have a home. ”

This year the tournament will be at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 16, at The Peninsula Club in Cornelius, NC, so you still have time to sign up.

All funds raised from this year’s Swing Fore A Child’s Place Golf Tournament will go directly to A Child’s Place to support their crucial work with homeless children in Charlotte area schools.

Staff from the organization work in the highest-need CMS schools every day, they help ease the impact of being homeless on a child’s education.

They hope to meet the goal reached last year of $200,000 raised by the generous support of players and sponsors.

Carnevale Rosa di Firenze (Florence Pink Carnival) to be held on Carolina Grace.

Carnevale Rosa di Firenze (Florence Pink Carnival)

In just a few weeks an Italian style fundraising event will rock the shores of Lake Norman raising money for a great cause, the breast cancer survivor and supporter team Healing Dragons.

The 100- foot yacht Carolina Grace will host the Carnevale Rosa di Firenze.

This fundraising event will raise monies for the Healing Dragons team, which will be participating in the 2018 International Breast Cancer Paddlers’ Commission (IBCPC) Participatory Festival.

The international race is held every four years, and this July it will be in Florence, Italy, 120 teams from around the world are expected to attend.

“Carnevale Rosa di Firenze will be unlike any other event in our area as the Carolina Grace will be transformed into a festive, celebratory and fun floating venue for this unique fundraising event,” said Marlah Ebert, president of the Healing Dragons team and co-captain of their Florence team.  “Where else can you watch an amazing sunset with 100 other non-profit supporters while floating on Lake Norman in March?!”

Ivester Jackson agent Pam Boileau, VP and Secretary for the team and event says “Healing Dragons is a dragon boat racing team for cancer survivors and supporters. However, it is our breast cancer survivors that are going to Florence. The entire Boat, 22 team members, have to be breast cancer survivors.” Pam will be heading to Florence with the team and this is her 8th year participating.

Lake Norman Luxury Yacht Charters debuted the Carolina Grace in September 2017 and the charter company selected Healing Dragons as one of the non-profit organizations they will support this year through their non-profit organization, Charters for Charity.

The night will feature all things Italian, including food, entertainment, and décor. A silent auction and raffle will feature items like custom designed jewelry, local hotel stays, restaurant gift certificates, and tickets to the Opera.

Event tickets are on sale for $100 per person and are limited to the first 100 sold.

If you’re interested in attending this event which will be held Sunday, March 4th 3 – 6 PM please contact:

Founded in 2009, Healing Dragons’ mission is to “inspire, encourage and support survivors of all cancers to triumph over the disease.” Through the collective and collaborative efforts of the team, the sport of dragon boating and team members and supporters’ commitment to health, mental and physical wellbeing, the non-profit’s goal is to improve cancer survivors’ quality of life. Education and community involvement are also a part of the organization’s vision.

The team practices on Mountain Island Lake and annually participates in at least six races throughout the southeast. Each year, the team kicks off its season in May at the Asian Festival on Lake Norman. Healing Dragons of Charlotte is sanctioned as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

About the Sport of Dragon Boating

Dragon boating is the fastest growing water sport in North America. The sport has been in existence for over 2,000 years and as history goes, the earliest races were in China and were rooted in training for naval warfare. Moving forward to the 1970s, the British-controlled government of Hong Kong started dragon boat racing as a way to attract tourism. Interest traveled throughout Europe, Asia and Canada with local festival races being held.

Dragon boats are human-powered watercraft.  Traditional dragon boats are 40 feet in length with ten seats, the 22 team members include side by side paddlers, a drummer/caller and steersperson. There are also ten person boats.  The length of races vary by venue and race conditions but typically range from 250 meters to a 2,000-meter finale.

In 1996, Don McKenzie, a sports medicine specialist in Canada, started the first breast cancer survivor team called “Abreast in A Boat.” It was his belief, and his research confirmed, that the sport would benefit breast cancer survivors through upper body and core strength training, lessening of lymphedema symptoms, team member support, commitment to wellness and the social aspects of being part of a team. In a very short period of time, the IBCPC was founded and now, over 166 teams from five continents are part of this organization. The organization’s international dragon boat festival will be held in Florence, Italy from July 6-8, 2018 and 120 teams, from throughout the world, will participate.

The Healing Dragons team welcomes new members and provide training. They encourage all cancer survivors and supporters to join and will start practices in late March/April depending on weather. Team members do not need to commit to the races.

Agents in the Community – Charlotteans 4 Cancer Cure (C4CC)

By: Lee Steinour – Digital Marketing Manager

6 years ago a group of women in the 18-Hole Ladies Golf Association at Carmel Country Club came up with a wonderful way to raise thousands of dollars to help bring cutting-edge cancer treatments to Charlotte and the Carolinas.

Many of the women in this tight-knit group and their families have been touched by cancer and so far through their hard work and dedication, they’ve raised more than $150,000 for the Levine Cancer Institute.

Ivester Jackson real estate agent Leslie Fisher is involved with C4CC and says funds are far-reaching “They work on clinical trials and research for a variety of cancers, not just one specific one, so the nice thing is our money impacts so many people!”

Two C4CC recognition plaques have been placed in Levine Cancer Institute public spaces including The Phase 1 Clinical Trials Family Waiting Room which was dedicated in August 2014 and another plaque was added to the LCI Pharmacy in 2016.

Want to get involved? You can still attend the 6th Annual C4CC Dinner Reception/Silent Auction on Thursday, October 5th at 5:30 PM at Carmel Country Club – contact Margie Eades (C4CCcancer@aol.com or 704-236-0920) for details before the Friday, September 29th deadline.

You can also make a financial donation to Levine Cancer Institute’s Phase 1 Clinical Trials at http://www.givecarolinas.org/C4CC

The 6th Annual Charlotteans 4 Cancer Cure Golf Tournament will be held this year on October 5th, at Carmel Country Club.
